LA Artcore will host a reception for a tandem-solo exhibit by Los Angeles artists Wakana Kimura and Bryan Ida on Sunday, Nov. 5, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Union Center for the Arts, 120 Judge John Aiso St. in Little Tokyo.
Kimura will exhibit works from three distinct series, all of which derive from the artist’s investigation of Buddhism via the utilization of varied drawing media, narrative and pictorial construction. Her layering techniques employ mash-ups of Japanese and Buddhist iconography, freely mapping styles and techniques borrowed from both Eastern and Western cultural perspectives. Kimura received her MFA for Otis Art Institute in 2011 and was recently commissioned to participate in L.A. Metro’s Public Art Program.
Ida’s recent paintings’ central theme rests upon relationships the artist has cultivated with those in Los Angeles’ art community. Moving from abstracted calligraphic and landscape imagery, his signature graphic style shifts towards portraiture, with emphasis on multiplicities of experience shown through his image’s shifting perspectives of the same subject. Drawn from charcoal and acrylic media, Ida’s works engage the process of looking through its multilayered and nuanced perspectives. Ida has exhibited nationally, in Taiwan, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles.
The exhibit runs from Nov. 1 to 29. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m.
