In honor of both Jewish American and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Los Angeles Museum of Tolerance (MoT) will host the Consulate General of Japan for the premiere of “Pilgrimage to Manzanar,” a short documentary produced by the American Jewish Committee (AJC), on Thursday, May 29.
The film follows Jewish and Japanese American activists as they unite and undertake a journey to Manzanar, the infamous World War II incarceration center where more than 10,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly held. Amidst rising antisemitism and ethnic hate, the activists explore the enduring human experience of being “othered.”
The event will feature remarks from Naoshige Aoshima, deputy consul general of Japan; Marcie Goldstein, AJC; Odin Odzil, filmmaker and AJC assistant director; and Vlad Khaykin, executive vice president, social impact and partnerships, North America, Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC).
A post-screening panel will feature pilgrimage participants and community leaders: Mitch Maki, president and CEO of Go For Broke National Education Center, and Yuko Kaifu, president of Japan House Los Angeles. The panel will be moderated by Richard Hirschhaut, regional director of AJC Los Angeles, and Vivian Alberts, chair of AJC Intergroup Committee.
The Museum of Tolerance is located at 9786 W. Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles. Doors opan at 6 pm.; program begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by reception at 7:30 p.m.
This event is offered free of charge. RSVP is required. Email [email protected] to register.
