He also thanked the directors and writers he’s worked with, calling them out by their first names: Penny (Marshall), Nora (Ephron), Clint (Eastwood), and more, while also giving credit to anyone who’s ever worked on one of his films. “You just have to somehow put it all together,” he said, “have faith in what the process is, and go there.”

Of course a speech from the unimpeachable actor who played Walt Disney and Fred Rogers was going to make some people cry, but Hanks showing up with a sniffle in his nose and a heart overflowing with emotion opened the floodgates even farther than anyone could have expected.
