Renowned French film director Alain Resnais died on March 1 at 91 in Paris.
His acclaimed films include “Hiroshima Mon Amour” (1959), in which a French actress (Emmanuelle Riva) and a Japanese architect (Eiji Okada), known only as “She” and “He,” have a series of conversations about memory and forgetfulness as they end their brief relationship.
The Japanese-French co-production, which touches on the effects of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, received an Oscar nomination for Marguerite Duras’ screenplay and was honored by the Cannes Film Festival and the Belgian Film Critics Association. It is regarded as a catalyst for the French New Wave.
Resnais is also known for “Night and Fog” (1955), a documentary about the Nazi death camps, and such feature films as “Last Year at Marienbad” (1961) and “Muriel” (1963).
