TORRANCE — Students are invited to enter their original artwork in El Camino College’s 2019 Onizuka Space Science Day Arts Contest.
The winner will receive an invitation to bring three guests to attend the annual Onizuka Space Science Day Dinner with NASA astronaut Stanley Glen Love on March 8.
Entries are due by 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26. Students should create original artwork inspired by the theme “The Future of Space Travel.” Accepted forms of artwork include drawing, painting, printmaking, computer-generated image, photograph or photographic collage.
Onizuka Space Science Day 2019 runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, at El Camino College, with check-in beginning at 8 a.m. The event is free and open to science-minded students in fifth through 12th grade. The hands-on conference is sponsored by the Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Memorial Committee, El Camino College and American Honda Motor Co. Inc.
The event will feature a presentation from astronaut Love, who completed his first spaceflight in 2008 to deliver the Columbus laboratory module to the International Space Station and install it there, logging more than 306 hours in space, including two spacewalks.
Following the presentation, students have their choice of a variety of hands-on science activities, experiments and classroom presentations and demonstrations led by El Camino College professors, students and guests from other institutions. The always-popular egg drop competition concludes the day’s events. Lunch will be provided for the first 900 students.
This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the space shuttle Challenger accident in which astronaut Ellison Onizuka perished along with the six other crew members. The annual event was created to honor Onizuka’s memory and his dream of inspiring youth to strive for and achieve their career goals.
To enter the art contest, submit a digital photo or scan of the artwork as an attachment to [email protected], or mail to El Camino College c/o Space Science Day, 16007 Crenshaw Blvd., Torrance, CA 90506. Entries should include the student’s name, age, home address, phone number, parent or guardian email, grade in school, teacher’s name and current school.
